Pencil Bow Door Hanger

School is back in session! What better way to start the new school year than with this fun pencil door hanger? Encourage your young scholars with this project perfect for an intermediate sewist.

Cutting Mat, 12” x 18”

¾ yd Dark Yellow Quilting Fabric
½ yd Light Yellow Quilting Fabric

Fat Quarter of Quilting Fabric in black, tan, gray & pink

Extra-loft Polyester Batting

Woven Interfacing, such as Pellon SF 101

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut fabric and interfacing into the following pieces:

Black

4" x 9"

Dark Yellow

(2) 3 ¼” x 24”
(6) 3 ¼” x 36”
(2) 3” x 9”

Light Yellow

(1) 3 ½” x 24”
(3) 3 ½” x 36”

Gray

2” x 9”

Pink

3 ½” x 9

Interfacing

(2) 9” x 36”

Tan

4 ½” x 9”

Step 2: Sew one dark yellow 24” strip to one side of the light yellow 24” strip. Sew the remaining dark yellow 24” strip to the other side of the light yellow strip. Press seams open.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 with one set of 36” yellow strips.

Step 4: Lay out the pencil front pieces in this order: pink, gray, 24” yellow strip set, tan, and black. Sew the pieces together in that order, using the picture for reference. Press seams open.

Step 5: Use basting spray to adhere batting to the following:

Pencil front
(1) 36” yellow strip set
(1) 3” x 9” dark yellow piece.
TIP: Rough cut the batting to size before attaching. Sizes do not need to be exact at this point.

Step 6: Quilt pieces as desired then trim batting flush with fabric edges.

Step 7: Create the pencil point:

With the wrong side facing up, find the middle of the black end of the pencil front and make a mark.
Use a ruler to draw a line from the center point to the spot along the pencil edge where the tan fabric meets the yellow fabric.
Repeat on the other side, using the picture for reference.

Step 8: Repeat Step 2 with the remaining 36” yellow strips.

Step 9: Apply interfacing to the 36” strip sets and quilt if desired.

Step 10: Place the yellow strip set backed with batting RST (Right Sides Together) with one yellow 36” strip set backed with interfacing. Pin or clip in place.

Step 11: Place the pencil front backed with batting RST with the remaining yellow 36” strip set backed with interfacing. Pin or clip in place.

Step 12: Place the two 3” x 9” dk yellow pieces RST and pin or clip in place.

Step 13: Sew the sets together, leaving an opening in each large enough for turning. Stitch along the drawn pencil point lines of the pencil front.

Step 14: Trim the pencil point down leaving a ¼” seam allowance.

Step 15: Clip corners and turn pieces right sides out. Use the turning tool to push corners and the pencil tip out. Pin or clip openings shut.

Step 16: Topstitch with a 1/8” seam allowance around each piece, making sure openings are closed.

Step 17: Construct bow loops:

Take the 9” x 36” piece and fold it in half, with right sides together.
Pin or clip sides in place.
Sew loop together.
Turn right sides out and position seam at the center back.
Gather the loop in the center and use large clips to hold it in place.

Step 18: Find the center point of the pencil piece. Gather at the center and use large clips to hold in place.

Step 19: Lay the loops on top of the pencil tails, matching centers. Secure together with one or two zip-ties and clip excess ends.

Step 20: Construct key ring hanger:

Thread key ring onto bow middle piece.
With wrong side out, wrap bow middle around the center section, covering the zip-tie(s). Bring ends together and pin or clip in place.
Machine or hand stitch to secure, making sure stitching is as close to the bow center as possible.
Turn the bow middle so the right side is out and center the seam along the back.
