Halloween Napkin Rings
Set the table for a spooktacular celebration! These DIY Halloween fabric napkin rings bring a little fright and a lot of festive charm to your decor.
Supply List:
- Fusible fleece (or batting) - approximately 2/3 yard
- Velcro: approximately 6” long tape
- Fabric: rings fabric - 5”x 40” strip
- scraps in chosen colors for ghost, bat, Jack-o-lantern, witch hat (approximately 4”x 16” strip for each napkin ring)
- Rotary cutter
- Mighty Steam Iron
- Dual-Purpose Marking Pen
- Scissors
- Permanent Fabric Marker
- Sewing machine
- Freezer paper (from grocery store) - this in optional, regular paper can also be used
Instructions:
Step 1: Take the long strip (5”x40” ) of fabric for the ring and press it in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
Step 2: Open up the folded strip and bring one raw long edge to the first fold and press. Repeat with the other long raw edge. Your long raw edges are now meeting in the middle.
Step 3: Cut strips from the fusible fleece that are 2 1/2” wide. (cut enough to cover the length of the folded fabric strip)
Step 4: Open the folded fabric strip, insert the strips of fusible fleece inside, fold fabric back and press everything.
Step 5: Fold this fabric/fleece strip in half lengthwise again, press and then take to the sewing machine to stitch along the long edges.
Step 6: Cut your ring strip into pieces that are 6” long.
Step 7: In the middle of each strip stitch a 1” piece of one side of Velcro.
Step 8: Fold each strip to form a ring, with the Velcro on on the inside of the folded strip and stitch along the short edge. Turn so that seam is inside and the Velcro piece is on the outside again, to complete your ring.
Making Ring Decorations:
Step 9: For each decoration, take two pieces of chosen fabric that are approximately 4”x8” and one piece of fusible fleece that is the same size.
Step 10: Sandwich the fusible fleece between two pieces of fabric (right side of fabric facing outside) and press.
Step 11: Trace the shapes of your decorations (ghost, bat, jack-o-lantern..) on the freezer paper and cut out.
Step 12: Press the cutout shapes on the fabric/fleece strip you made in step 2 (shiny side of freezer paper down) as shown. This is a temporary press and the paper shape will be your guide to stitch around it. Once you stitch around the shape, simply move it to next position on the fabric strip, press temporarily and stitch around.
NOTE: using freezer paper just makes this process easier as it stays on fabric and can be used as a guide to stitch around it. If you do not have freezer paper, just use regular paper and trace the shape on fabric with marking pen
Step 13: Cut both shapes with scissors (or pinking shears) just outside the stitching. You now have two pieces that will make a pocket to stuff a few treats in.
Step 14: Take the other piece of Velcro and stitch it in the middle of one of the shapes you made.
Step 15: Take a permanent fabric marker and draw eyes etc. on the other shape.
Step 16: Place two shapes together so that Velcro is on the outside of one and drawing is on the outside of another shape. Stitch two shapes together, on top of the stitches you already did, but leaving the opening on the top so that you can put treats inside. The red arrows show where approximately to start and stop stitching so that you have a good opening left.
Step 17: Attach your shape to the napkin ring using Velcro pieces and stuff it with treats!!
And you're done! Congratulations on making the Halloween Napkin Rings!
