Fabric & Notion Requirements:
- Gingham cotton fabric for shorts and strawberry appliqué
- Green cotton fabric for strawberry appliqué
- T-shirt
- 2-sided Craft Fuse
- 1-sided Fusible Interfacing
- Coordinating Threads
Instructions:
Step 1: Adhere 2-sided craft fuse to the green fabric according to manufacturer’s directions.
Step 2: Trace stem pattern onto craft fuse paper backing, reversing the design if desired.
Step 3: Cut out the traced stem shape.
Step 4: Adhere 2-sided craft fuse to the gingham fabric according to manufacturer’s directions.
Step 5: Trace strawberry pattern onto craft fuse paper backing, reversing the design if desired.
Step 6: Cut out the traced strawberry shape.
Step 7: Fold T-shirt in half and press a slight crease.
Step 8: Using the manufacturer’s directions, adhere the strawberry to the shirt, matching centers.
Step 9: Stitch around the raw edge of the appliqué using a zigzag or blanket stitch.
Step 10: Position the stem over the top of the strawberry and adhere it to the shirt.
Step 11: Stitch around the raw edge of the appliqué using a zigzag or blanket stitch.
Step 12: The T-shirt is now finished.
Shorts Construction Instructions:
Refer to pattern for fabric and seam allowance requirements.
Note: RST means right sides together.
Step 13: Use the pattern to cut the waistband from the fabric. TIP: When there are straight sections on the pattern, use a ruler and rotary trimmer for faster, more accurate cuts.
Step 14: Use a tailor’s chalk pencil to make any needed markings on the fabric pieces.
Step 15: Using the pattern, cut out the drawstring piece or pieces.
Step 16: Cut the shorts' front and back pieces from the fabric.
Step 17: Cut two small pieces of 1-sided fusible interfacing. Adhere to waistband as indicated on pattern and set aside.
Step 18: Pin one front piece to one back piece RST at the side seam. Sew together.
Step 19: Repeat Step 18 with remaining front and back pieces. Finish raw edges of both side seams as desired.
Step 20: Pin inseams RST and sew together.
Step 21: Finish seams as desired.
Step 22: Pin the crotch seam with right sides together.
Step 23: Sew the crotch seam together and finish the raw edge. At this point, the pieces will start looking like real shorts.
Step 24: Sew waistband together at short sides, making sure to stop and start stitching at marked spots. Finish raw edge. Press seam open.
Step 25: Use the VARIO Tool to attach eyelets to waistband as indicated on the pattern.
Step 26: Pin the waistband to the shorts body, matching the center front and back seam.
Step 27: Sew waistband to shorts body.
Step 28: Press the seam toward the shorts body and topstitch to secure it in place.
Step 29: Determine the elastic length by wrapping it around the waist and adding approximately 1” for the seam allowance.
Step 30: Use an elastic threader to push the elastic through the waistband opening. Pull the elastic through the casing and pin the ends together.
Step 31: Sew ends together, making sure to backstitch repeatedly to secure.
Step 32: Hand-stitch the casing opening closed.
Step 33: Try on the shorts and pin the hem to the desired length. Fold and press the hem in place. TIP: Use a hem gauge to make sure both hem lengths are even.
Step 34: Sew the hem using a topstitch.
Step 35: Fold drawstring lengthwise and press.
Step 36: Stitch using the noted seam allowance and leaving a 3” opening for turning.
Step 37: Trim along stitched edge, leaving full seam allowance at opening section.
Step 38: Use the turning tool to turn the drawstring right sides out.
Step 39: Press the drawstring flat and topstitch along the seam edge, making sure to close the opening.
Step 40: Use the bodkin to insert the drawstring into the casing, through the eyelet opening.
Step 41: Push drawstring all the way through and out the other eyelet opening.
Step 42: Knot the drawstring ends and enjoy your new pajamas!
